Sperm capacitation: effect of assisted reproductive technology
نویسندگان
چکیده
The past several decades witnessed great advances in the Andrology Sciences in humans. This certainly increased our knowledge in understanding the process of spermatogenesis, capacitation, and fertilization. Much of this work has been acquired from animal experimentation (1, 2, 3). However, the introduction of assisted reproductive technology improved our understanding of the process of fertilization in humans and increased the research in this field to improve the success of the treatment of the infertile couple (4, 5). The process of spermatogenesis depends on an intact hypothalamic-pituitary testicular axis and an intact internal hormonal milieu. Folliclestimulating hormone stimulates the process of spermatogenesis. Leutinizing hormone stimulates the Leydig cells to secrete testosterone which is important for the maturation of the sperm (6, 7). It takes about 70 days for the spermatogenesis cycle

Expression of cystatin C in the female reproductive tract and its effect on human sperm capacitation
BACKGROUND Cystatin C (CST3), a cysteine protease inhibitor in seminal plasma, is expressed in animal uteri. However, its expression in the human female reproductive tract and its effect on human sperm capacitation are unclear. METHODS The cellular localization of CST3 was observed using immunohistochemistry. The binding of CST3 to sperm was examined using immunocytochemistry. Sperm motility ...
متن کاملFactors and pathways involved in capacitation: how are they regulated?
In mammals, fertilization occurs via a comprehensive progression of events. Freshly ejaculated sperm have yet to acquire progressive motility or fertilization ability. They must first undergo a series of biochemical and physiological changes, collectively known as capacitation. Capacitation is a significant prerequisite to fertilization. During the process of capacitation, changes in membrane p...

Like the human female, the mare experiences reproductive tract pathology that may sometimes be circumvented by the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). One such technology, gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), may be used in mares that exhibit ovulatory, oviductal, or uterine abnormalities that limit the use of common ARTs, such as embryo transfer. Homologous GIFT has been succes...
متن کاملEffect of estrogens on boar sperm capacitation in vitro
BACKGROUND Mammalian sperm must undergo a series of controlled molecular processes in the female reproductive tract called capacitation before they are capable of penetrating and fertilizing the egg. Capacitation, as a complex biological process, is influenced by many molecular factors, among which steroidal hormone estrogens play their role. Estrogens, present in a high concentration in the fe...
متن کاملIn Vitro Antioxidant Treatment of Semen Samples in Assisted Reproductive Technology: Effects of Myo-Inositol on Nemaspermic Parameters
Male infertility and the poor quality of sperm seem to be influenced by oxidative stress. In particular, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) mainly produced by morphologically altered spermatozoa affect sperm motility, morphology, and integrity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Myo-Inositol (Myo-Ins) on a number of parameters such as viscosity and total and progressive motili...
